Soon it will be the thirtieth anniversary of my self-employed status as a musician, but I don’t think I’ll be celebrating my Jubilee. I have found my time pursuing the career that I chose as a boy difficult and often heartbreaking, but from time to time it brings rewards such as I can’t imagine in any other walk of life. A love-hate relationship, then.

I don’t consider myself particularly gifted – I know so many musicians whose talent seems to fairly drip from their fingers. I’m not one of those. But I love music as much as anyone I know, and as such I have often pressed a project harder and further than others might – it’s just through Love.

I speak softly. It means I get interrupted a lot, which I detest, but I also find that sometimes, very sometimes, other softly-spoken people are drawn to me. And softly-spoken people are always the most interesting.

Perhaps I should also mention that my critical facility is respected enough for me to have assisted in the judging of two major literary prizes so far (Costa 2007 and Orange 2011), and that I once sparked the raising of £500,000 for charity with a single decent idea.
