SLIP DIPPING

Philip Lee invited people to dip their hands, feet, or any other part of their body, into a large bucket of slip – smooth white runny clay.

While Cally Trench took photographs, Philip Lee noted down the participants’ comments about how it made them feel, what it made them think about and any memories the process brought to mind.

The comments included:

- Now it’s not my hand!
- It seems clean – mud should be dirty!
- I feel like I’m a strawberry in cream.
- Perfectly between solid and liquid.
- Like making a cake mixture.
- It looks more plastic than clay.
- Cool, suspended, weightless, soft...
- In a B-movie trapped in quick sand – amniotic fluid... or in the crater lake of a volcano...
- Buoyant, close, viscous, exciting, weight removed with water, satisfying, beach, water, submerging.
- Like yoghurt!
- Foodstuffs, creamy pavlovas, doing something risqué with ladies, suggestive.
- Fleshy – viscous bodily fluids – like putting your hand inside a body. From the outside my arm and hand now looks synthetic like a manikin...
- Swimming in the sea, mixing foodstuff with mum, I want to undress and and get into the clay!
- Feel like my whole body is liquefying – the feeling is affecting the rest of my body. Absolutely gorgeous.

As TH stood with clay over his face he was silent and still. Then, very slowly and quietly, he said: Memories of my time on a beach in Ireland – childhood summer holidays – soft sand passing through my fingers.
